Volunteer Organization Protection Act of 2017 (VOPA)

Volunteer Organization Protection Act of 2017 (VOPA)

What is VOPA?

The Volunteer Organization Protection Act of 2017 impacts every Lion in the United States.

Under current law, service clubs have been forced to dissolve when they have been unable to afford the costs of litigation resulting from a volunteer's negligence. VOPA can help protect your club from being drawn into lawsuits should an accident occur during a Lions Club service activity or event.

What can I do?

  1. Submit a letter. Click here to generate a custom letter that LCI will personally deliver to your representative in Congress.
  2. Call your congressional representative's local office. According to political staffers, a simple call is the best way to get your lawmaker's attention. Enter your address at the top of this page to search your representative's name and phone number.
  3. Send a petition. Click here to download the petition.

What should I say?

"Hi, my name is [your name], and I'm a constituent from [your city]. I'm a member of the local Lions Club, and I'm calling to express my support for the Volunteer Organization Protection Act of 2017. This bill is important to me because it will protect my club against lawsuits for actions outside of our control. Please ask Representative [Rep. name] to sponsor and support VOPA. Thank you for your time."
